Michelle Lakes- Challenging- 3 Days / July 18-20, Aug 15-17, Sept 19-21, 2026
Day 1 – Trailhead to Michelle Lakes
We meet in Canmore at 6am, gear checked and spirits high, before driving to the trailhead. From the moment we step onto the trail, the wilderness unfolds around us, towering peaks, sparkling streams, and vibrant wildflowers guiding our way. By the afternoon we arrive at Michelle Lakes, a hidden alpine gem. Here we set up basecamp beside the crystal clear waters, surrounded by towering mountains, where the calm of the lakes and the grandeur of the scenery promise a magical start to our adventure.

Day 2 – Summit and Explore
Today is the crown jewel of the trip. We climb a nearby peak that commands breathtaking panoramic views over Michelle Lakes and the surrounding Rockies. Every step higher reveals more awe inspiring vistas, jagged ridges, emerald alpine meadows, and untouched wilderness as far as the eye can see. After reaching the summit, there is time to explore the lakeshore, wander hidden trails, or take a refreshing swim in the pristine waters, feeling completely immersed in nature’s wild beauty before returning to basecamp under the glow of the surrounding peaks.
Day 3 – Michelle Lakes to Trailhead
On the final day, we pack up and retrace our path through forests, valleys, and streams, each turn offering a final, unforgettable glimpse of the mountains and lakes that have defined this adventure. As we reach the trailhead, the memories of alpine vistas, shimmering waters, and the pure thrill of the wilderness will stay with us long after the trip ends.

Is this for you?
This trip is considered challenging. You will carry your own clothing and equipment, food for the duration of the trip, and a share of group gear. With careful packing, backpacks are typically around 16 kg (35 lbs).
Previous backpacking experience is not required, though it is helpful. You should be in strong physical condition and comfortable hiking for several consecutive days over mostly off-trail terrain, including forests, alpine slopes, and rugged valleys. Day 1 is the most demanding, with a sustained climb of 1096 meters over 11.7 km to reach Michelle Lakes. Day 2 is a shorter, rewarding day exploring a nearby peak with breathtaking views over the lakes, giving you time to soak in the alpine scenery and even enjoy a swim.
We hike at a steady, manageable pace and stay together as a group. Training beforehand with hikes or walks carrying a loaded pack will make this spectacular alpine adventure far more enjoyable and rewarding.
